  1. Wow...some of those pics are very upsetting and down right dangerous.

How does a site their size let that pass?

At YouMe.social, we have strict policies against porn/spam/and hate speech.

  3. The purge was bungled? Or is there something more insidious here?
I've been on tumblr for years and other than the odd porn bot I've not had any issues.

  4. Y'know, exploring the various post G+ habitats, I've pretty much concluded that there are plenty of Nazis, haters, meme-lovers, and "some good people too", all across this big, wide, Internet. I'm feeling a bit like "back to the past future" in adopting a "surf safely & wisely" stance. It's possible to hold on to lots of good things the Net offers, while necessary to be mindful of the toxicity around us, as in "RL".

  5. Remember, kids, dangerous Nationalist propaganda is fine.

    Female presenting nipple is not.

  6. Michael Fenichel Some platforms make it easier to find than others.

I'm not convinced Tumblr's the worst offender here, though I can think of some candidates.

G+ has done reasonably well in this regard.

  7. Thing is - they said they're banning nsfw content, but the crackdown hit LGBT sites first and hardest. Many (totally sfw) LGBT blogs on Tumblr, which were very important for many people as sources of information, of comfort and of social contact (especially LGBT people from countries and regions, where being nonheteronormative leads to social stigma, legal persecution and even danger to health and life), were closed down on day one, while actual porn blogs have only been targeted slowly. Many weren't even hit till today, and those that were, often haven't been shut down but only had some content blocked.
Also interesting (or rather disturbing and deeply troubling): People writing blogs on Jewish topics (and their followers) are being constantly and massively presented "blog recommendations" of alt-right, white supremacist, racist, nazist and other antisemitic Tumblrs.
Seems there's some kind of agenda there...

  9. Mayhem Good, Sex Bad!
We haven't come very far from the Hays Code of the 1930s.

  10. Quork Q'Tar that's a very interesting observation. If love to see/read an article about that... Any news outlets would be interested? Democracy Now, for instance?

  11. I'm not aware of news coverage, haven't searched for any though. That's mostly my own personal observations (especially the fact that most of the nsfw blogs known to me were still mostly or fully accessible even weeks after the new rules came into force) and those of one of my best friends, who's very active in the sfw LGBT blog scene and loosely follows other bloggers' reports.

  14. This brings to mind other aspects of culture and media - we're not going to allow depictions of sex, but violence gets a pass. We're not going to allow nudity, but we're going to promote advertising and themes that show the thinnest cover that will fan the flames of unrequited desire to consume... whatever is being advertised. Because monetized consumption is the cultural engine; it is not an abomination wiping out other species and leaving toxic waste in its path. Is the violence and destruction far removed from the advertised lifestyle? Or is there an inate component that is bubbling up from the heat at the bottom of the engine?

    This post is political.

Yeah, just in case anyone thought I didn't enforce these policies on all levels, I do.

  16. Hmmm... The real violence is removed in the same way the real sex is removed. When the tiki torch-bearing acolytes first encounter real violence, they seem shocked.
