Hello , I have a few questions regarding necessary storage space for G+ archive :

How big do you think a full G+ archive will be, assuming I have between 5 000 and 10 000 posts, comprised mostly of text, links, and pictures averaging 1 MB in size ?

Will Google Takeout exceed 150 GB ? (My current free hard drive space), if so, how about F+M exporter ?

I was initially put off after seeing the oversized takeout downloads of other people, waited for F+M to mature a bit, but now that the exporter is being targeted with captcha, I might end up going the Google route...

TIA, and good luck saving your plus years !

  2. IDK how many posts I have, but I've been on G+ since day 1 and my takeout for G+ was only 2GB

  3. Google takeout will go to any size, it will just split it into .zip files.
When I exported my G drive, it was over 400GB. (took a week to download it, having to only click on a few zips at a time because of my limited rural internet connection)

  4. Just create an archive through Google Data Takeout and choose the option that sends a download link via email. You'll then see how big the archive actually is once it's finished creating it. If it's too big, you can always decide to not download it and let it expire. You can also just have it created again at a later point too.
Requesting a GDT archive in no way obligates you to immediately download it or lose the data.

  5. Keep in mind though that if you want to extract the archive, you'll likely need a bit more than double the archive size, as you'll need space for both the archive, and the extracted content. :)

  6. Younes if you'd like to recreate these posts and communities from the imported data you can do so using LifeCloud's data importer tool:

  7. Size varies tremendously, largely based on the number of images associated with the posts you've made. These need not be images you'd specifically uploaded to G+. And a single image may be present multiple times.

My own archive includes over 10k posts and ... numerous images ... about 1,500. The bulk of total storage was in animated GIFs. The post-related JSON files are about 450 MB in total, the archive, in total, over 15.5 GB.

The Friends+Me exporter tends to produce vastly smaller archives, in part because saving image content is an optional additional step.

Creating (or trying to create) your G+ archive doesn't cost you anything, though it may not succeed. You should get a basic idea of how large the archive will be..

As Filip H.F. Slagter notes, your extracted archive will require substantially more space. I'd budget for 3 copies of the content -- the original compressed archive file(s), the uncompressed content, and a copy of specifically selected content.

Keep in mind that disk storage is comparatively inexpensive, and you can buy a 1 TB external HD for about $50-$100. That can be repurposed for local storage or backups afterwards, and is well worth the expense.

  8. I have over 50k posts here, based on what Google+ Exporter app managed to retrieve for me, which includes community posts (that also includes posts from members), pages and collections. The exported files are only a few MBs, while the pictures are only around 17GB. When I used data takeout it seems to reach more than 1TB that my 1TB OneDrive could not cater.

  9. Halfey Halphstein did that include the Photos sub-item in the Google+ Stream item of Google Data Takeout? Would you mind requesting a new Google Data Takeout of your Google+ Stream, but then choosing just the Posts sub-item from the "Select Specific Data" option?

No need to have it put on your OneDrive for the test; just select the "Send download link to email" option. :)

  30. Filip H.F. Slagter That's exactly what I did but the system seems to ignore that and maybe it still tries to include EVERYTHING despite what I chose to export. I have posted about this before.

EDIT: Selecting the "Send download link to email" always end up "incomplete with errors".

    ReplyDelete
  31. Halfey Halphstein yes, and I doubt that sending it to a cloud solution will remedy the 'incomplete' error. The 'incomplete' is not necessarily an error that can't be overcome, and it also doesn't necessarily mean that using another exporter will help. If you open the Takeout/index.html file in the archive, it should list which of the files are actually missing, and in most cases will even offer a direct link to the asset so you can attempt a manual download of it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Don't expect me to sift through thousands of link though.

Well if possible I only wanted to save the first few years of my posts because most of "intelligent engagements" in my account occurred around this time. Then G+ revamped its UI which upsets many interesting people in my circles and they went inactive.

EDIT: I'm already around 1/4 through of importing my posts into WordPress, using the files from the exporter app. At this point I think it's kind of 'masochistic' for me to keep requesting data takeout that will never be useful.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Halfey Halphstein downloading a list of links automatically can be done fairly easily with tools such as wget.
Anyway, I was merely curious to the total size of the archive as you indicated it went over a terabyte when storing to OneDrive, as well as what kind of files are indicated in the index.html files as missing/incomplete, as it could help me possibly determine what is causing the issue, or possibly help find a way to make the archive complete, or reduce the size of the extracted archive.
As you are clearly not interested in this, I wish you all the luck with your future endeavours. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Filip H.F. Slagter I chose to save to OneDrive because even when I chose email link the archive went up to 400GB+ which is still impossible for me to download given my not-so-fast internet, and the limited-time download window (it was 1 week or so IIRC).

So it's not that I'm not interested but I already got the job done using a different tool which I see little point to keep trying the official takeout.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks for the feedback guys
I requested a takeout following the link in the wiki and the export is incomplete. It's 2.67 GB which is surprisingly small :/
I haven't downloaded it yet to check the list of missing files, I will just try another takeout.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Younes Layachi I would suggest to download one and check the index.html in the archive to see which files are incomplete:)
If you haven't uploaded (large/many) videos, I would say 2.7 GB isn't that unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Filip H.F. Slagter how does it help me to know which files are missing ?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Younes Layachi You'll at the very least know if the files were of any importance, and they'll likely also point to the original online location so you can manually download them.
I mean, if an archive is incomplete because it's only missing a single file, then I would still consider it sufficiently complete.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Filip H.F. Slagter 🤔 you're right. I'll do that asap

    ReplyDelete
  40. Update : I tried a G+ takeout that excludes communities and it showed no errors , for the same size.

Anyone else had a problem with communities ?
