What I'm doing, for what it's worth

What I'm doing, for what it's worth

I've been active on Google+ (Ok, the world's biggest G+ fanboi...) and so I thought I should chime in and let everyone know what my plan is:

* My main G+ replacement is a Squarespace blog: https://elgan.com/

* I'm also doubling down on Twitter, mainly because I'm a journalist and Twitter is crack cocaine for journalists

* I'm toying with an embrace of Linkedin, because I already have a ton of contacts there

* As I type this, I'm downloading all my posts with Google Takeout. I'm probably going to re-post a bunch of them for posterity

* I'm also quitting Facebook (because it sucks) and am replacing it with a shared folder on Google Photos. Here's an explanation: https://elgan.com/blog/how-i-replaced-facebook-with-google-photos

In other words, and to summarize, I'm scattered to the wind with the closure of Google+, just like everyone else

And finally, in case you missed it, I wrote a Eulogy for Google+ for Fast Company: https://www.fastcompany.com/90252543/goodbye-google-a-eulogy-for-the-last-great-social-network

Edit: Sorry, this comment should not have been in german. I apologize. Google showed me a german translation and I do not know why ...

  2. Hey Mike Elgan we plan to add Squarespace support to Google+ Exporter, it may be a good idea to use the tool for exporting your G+ feeds ;-)

  3. Very fine tool, the F+ME G+ exporter. Maybe you could build a small and very time sensitive business making conversions.

  5. And for posterity you might want to add links to your most important articles to http://web.archive.org too ;-)

  6. Mike Elgan A good and pragmatic plan. My thinking is: self-ownership of content, multiple syndication, open protocols where possible, and pragmatics.

F+MGE gets my strong vote of support. And it will submit your public post to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.

  30. I think the Nicebook is an excellent idea Mike Elgan -- I dumped Facebook almost a year ago. I do have a technical question, my queries thus far lead me to believe the answer is No, but here it is. Can you upload directly to your Shared Folder (Nicebook) with Backup and Sync, or another app? In Lightroom I can export directly to a Google drive.

  33. stefan holzhauer Just for the record, I've heard other people's complaints about spam messages and posts on LinkedIn -- but I've never seen or received any myself.

The thing about LinkedIn, Mike Elgan, is that it's really designed for corporate types. I use it, and I know a lot of artists and would-be artists, like me, who are on it; but I'm not sure any of us (or, for that matter, anyone else) has actually gotten a job from it! Still, I enjoy the posts.

  34. Mike Elgan Even without direct export tools, F+MGE is an excellent choice for this. Michael K Johnson created this port of the HercuLien and Eustathios Community as a static archive via Jekyll, using an F+MGE export.

The source is also posted to GitLab, and I've posted that here separately.
