My data (posts, comments, etc.) only makes sense in context.
ReplyDeleteThus, Google must provide means to download all my data with the context it's related to.

Google Moderator was killed long ago, despite its usefulness.
ReplyDeleteGerhard Torges Well, yes, your posts only make sense in context, and that context involves several dimensions not generally accessible in most universes, except by special consent, decree, and great expense, plus spiritual purity ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting game, context. Some things survive and transcend it, some don't. And if you're looking at preserving something, then you either pick what works without context, or you see how well things can stand on their own. I'm willing to try at least some of my content on its own and see what is made of it.
A good concept, just a shame it's lost its focus over time.
ReplyDeleteEdward Morbius one of those dimensions is time. Yesterday's news to wrap today's fish and chips?
ReplyDeleteI have one new blog from someone I followed here on G+ ... will see if we still have enough points of contact that interest me to keep reading.
That cross-pollination we have on G+ will be truly hard to rebuild in another time and place. I am whittling my circles down to a handful I would hate not to be able to read somewhere in future!
Filip H.F. Slagter There were flaws to the original focus as well.
ReplyDeleteDiana Studer I've been having interesting discussions in several places, and ... would prefer those move off G+ ... on this topic.
ReplyDeleteDan York was commenting at Mastodon about the importance of the directory within social networking platforms. The irony is that Google+ has an absolutely massive directory. At last count (Mar 2017 data, tabulated just now), 3.3581772 billions.
Another metric is content. The text within G+ is probably somewhere in the vicinity of 300 GB, total. Which is large, but not ginormous.
Then there's activity, what tends to get called "engagement" -- posts, comments, plus-ones, reshares. But also off-site consequences -- click throughs, articles read, content saved, ideas formed, relationships made (or broken), etc., etc. And I think that's the meat of it -- you can have a directory or content, and those help, but if you don't have actual and meaningful activity -- what's there is a nothingburger.
And small communities can matter. The cabinets and central committees of the US, UK, China, German, Japan, are small but consequential. Their legislatures -- a few hundreds, occasionally thousands, of members, are also in the grand scheme small, but hell if they don't matter.
There's also information that is durable. I'm doing a lot of online reading, and from other current sources. But I've also been delving into works decades, centuries, even millennia old. And there is value in some of those. History matters. The present matters. Neither are everything. And getting the balance right is key.
BTW, my view of the various reports of What Went Wrong with G+ (my own included) is that it's very much a case of the blind men and the elephant. We each have experience with the parts close to us, and little elsewhere. Which means that there's some larger truth outside of us.
ReplyDeleteNone of us sees the real elephant in the room.
