Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Q: When is Google+ shutting down?

A: April of 2019. Four months earlier than originally announced.

March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs, including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps.

https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/expediting-changes-google-plus/

https://developers.google.com/+/api-shutdown

Q: Where should I go?

A: There is no one answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most.

Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities

Q How do I know where people are going?

A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2

The results are posted here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GYSUTGpmz-2trxhvNyEv_rnNF1GvEf4OW0Lct7KxEiY

Others are using #SignalFlare posts, and #googleplus and #gplusrefugee hashtags on their new sites.

Also check a user's About page or pinned posts on their streams for forwarding information. Create these yourself for others to find.

Q: Can I save my G+ content?

A: YES! Use the Friends+Me Google+ Exporter for best results: https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me

Other tools for archiving exist. Official Google Data Takeout can work but is problematic: https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/plus_pages,circles,stream,plus_one,profile,plus_communities

Q: I have more data migration questions/issues?

A: See the Data Migration page: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Data_Migration_Process_and_Considerations

Q: What should I be doing as a G+ Community owner / moderator?

A: Communicate and coordinate with your community:
https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Migrating_Google%2B_Communities

Q: Should I delete my Google+ account or Communities?

A: You could, but we don't suggest it. Doing so will remove all content you and others have made, making it much harder for others to save their work.

Q: Can I simply convert to a G Suite / Corporate Google+ account?

A: Short answer: No.

Long answer: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/FAQ#Q:_Is_there_any_way_to_continue_using_Google.2B_after_the_sunset.3F

Q: What if I have more questions?

  1. The G+MM Short FAQ. Major changes: we're recommending F+MGE over GDT for data archive. Slight language tweeks.

Please share this widely across G+ and elsewhere as Google are not advising users on the shutdown.

    Thanks.

  2. What's the 'plus_pages' supposed to toggle in the GDT URL? I'm not seeing any difference with or without.

    ReplyDelete
  3. What is the easiest way to have extensive member profiles on the Google Meet or Google hangouts?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Malthus John best to make that a separate post, preferably with a bit more details about the platform, rather than linking it on this FAQ post. :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. Filip H.F. Slagter - ok, thanks. I did post one here about a week ago, and I will do more before the Beta opens!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Edward Morbius Hey have you used the friendsplusme exporter for any one of your communities and if so would we be able to see somehow the data/format that was exported? The reason why is to see if we can create a simple importer into LifeCloud (www.lifecloud.site) that would allow you to rehydrate your community data. Could potentially help a lot of people.

  7. Edward Morbius
Dankeschön für diese Information, lieber Edward!
Ich denke es kann für einige sehr interessant sein und werde es teilen. ;)

  8. What will happen in January 28? Heard something about that date, I think...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Javan Joel I'm somewhat embarrassed to say I've not yet, though that's on my list.

I do have archives of my own posts, however (via Google Data Takeout), and those have been requested to be saved to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine -- about 10k+ posts. Request via a bash script on Linux, 130 minutes runtime.

There are several example communities, and the +FriendsPlusMe G+ account (search for that, I can't link it for whatever reason) has examples of saved communities, its own and from other users.

  10. Unknown Hero January 28 is the start of the G+ API shutdown. That will complete by March 7.

Google+ should be mostly unaffected. Third party tools, apps, and integrations using the API will begin to fail at this time, and fail completely by 7 March 2019.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Filip H.F. Slagter "plus_pages" will export (metadata, AFAIR) any Google+ Pages associated with your account.

If you're not a brand, nothing happens. This has to be requested by the profile owning the page(s) in question.

Belt-and-suspenders completeness inclusion. Most people won't need that, but it doesn't hurt anything.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lee Grupsmith-Pedersen We don't know, and Google haven't said. We've asked them. Many, many times.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Edward Morbius thanks for that. We should be able to restore all those posts to your own group in LifeCloud. If you're able to provide a sampling of the data we can give it a try.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Edward Morbius oh ok, thanks. I was a little worried.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Edward Morbius another question, I play some mobile games and I connect various account through Google Play which is also Google+ (I think bc the pfp appears there), would they get affected? Or are they not connected to G+?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've been searching for this to add to our Digital Library.
    Thanks.

Q How do I know where people are going?

A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2

The results are posted here: docs.google.com - Google Plus Migration Directory (Responses)

  17. Javan Joel Keep bugging me on that. Could be interesting.

You're welcome to post in G+MM asking for volunteers if you like. Which might keep you from waiting on me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. al m Individual groups can also create Google Forms (or other capture systems) for members.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Unknown Hero The official answer is that other Google products are not affected by the shutdown, unless otherwise specified. There are exceptions, largely for content that refers to G+.

    Examples would be:

    * Comments on Blogger.
    * G+ images viewed as Google Photos albums.
    * Use of Google+ (versus Google) login on third-party sites.
    * Any API access to Google content.
    * Google+ badges on third-party or Google sites.
    * Any G+ buttons on third party or Google sites.

The Google+ Help community may be able to answer these questions better than we can. Several of their mods circulate here and provide useful answers.

  20. Edward Morbius re 'plus_pages', I have several Pages/Brand Accounts associated with my profile (such as FiXato's Playlists and FiXato ), but I saw no additional option appearing in the GDT Create New Archive list when using that url flag. In fact, when using solely that flag, it had no effect at all and all properties were selected.
So, is it something that's added silently to the actual exported data when using this flag, or has this property also been removed, or is it just an incorrect flag?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Filip H.F. Slagter I don't know. But what I've described is what I think is supposed to happen.

Google's docs are less than crystal, as you're aware.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Edward Morbius where did you find that particular id? From the HTML source of the GDT page, or was it described elsewhere?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Filip H.F. Slagter I'm not sure. I think that if you select items, the selections turn up in the URL. Or they're described in the page, and yes, I may have looked.

    Honestly don't recall.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Julie Wills Thanks.

The bottom line: $1/mo increase for Basic, $2/mo increase for business, per user. Effective on or after April 2, depending on billing cycles and/or plan renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wondering how long it will be before they'll also force grandfathered free legacy accounts to start paying...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Filip H.F. Slagter Depends. The clever way to do that these days seems to be to phase out the service and replace it with an "enhanced service".

Where the key enhancement is typically fees paid the enhancer.

    ReplyDelete
  27. +Filip H.F. “FiXato” Slagter There are already a number of features that are not available to Grandfathered free accounts.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Edward Morbius
    What does this mean??
    * G+ images views as Google Photos albums.

I have albums of images from G+ saved in Google Photos, they saved automatically when I used to make albums in G+. They are supposed to be saved in GP if they are there... right? No photo in GP is supposed to get deleted without my permission.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Edward Morbius Ok also I'm going to do some research today to see whether there's an API we can hit to make it even easier for G+ users to migrate. If there's something we hit we''l develop something and then I'll post for volunteers in the G+MM community. Will be back on this shortly.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Unknown Hero Double check with the G+ Help community (or maybe Julie Wills knows here) on that. But my understanding is that some of that content may vanish.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Javan Joel You've got less than a week before that API starts being disabled, and until March 7 before the rest is.

But yes, that would be useful.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Edward Morbius Wow good to know. Will take care of this ASAP

    ReplyDelete
  33. That's super useful, thank you Edward Morbius

    ReplyDelete
  34. Edward Morbius we were able to get a data importer up so that anyone can easily sync their "Google Takeout" data into LifeCloud which will rebuild their Communities, Posts, and Collections.

It's in BETA mode yet available to start using now here:
    lifecloud.site - Google+ Data Importer - LifeCloud

Will also do a post in G+MM

    ReplyDelete
  35. Javan Joel Awesome!

    Any direct Google-to-LifeCloud transfers?

For both mobile users and large communities, that could be a big win.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Edward Morbius The problem is, as you mentioned, Google is shutting down that API in the next few days. It didn't make sense for us to develop against it since it may not even be there by the time users get a chance to use the tool. Therefore the best option was Takeout.

By the way we checked out your Plexodus Wiki and are pretty impressed. We also hope to see ourselves there at some point :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Javan Joel Understood.

    Wiki is ... somewhat backlogged.
