Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Google+ Mass Migration short FAQ

Q: When is Google+ shutting down?

A: April of 2019. Four months earlier than originally announced.

March 7, 2019 for Google+ APIs, including Google+ Sign-in and integrations for web & mobile apps.

Q: Where should I go?

A: There is no single answer! This community can help you chose where to go, but you decide what fits best. Where your personal contacts go matters most.

Major alternatives are listed here: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Established_G%2B_Exodus_Communities

Q How do I know where people are going?

A: Some have used this form: https://goo.gl/forms/EnkYfrY9HYKkr7iy2

The results are posted here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GYSUTGpmz-2trxhvNyEv_rnNF1GvEf4OW0Lct7KxEiY

Others are using #SignalFlare posts, and #googleplus and #gplusrefugee hashtags on their new sites.

Also check a user's About page or pinned posts on their streams for forwarding information. Create these yourself for others to find.

Q: Can I save my G+ content?

A: YES! https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/plus_pages,circles,stream,plus_one,profile,plus_communities

• Select JSON format where possible for each item.
• Select the archive format, zip file is suggested default.
• Select an archive chunk size. If unsure, leave the default of 2 GB.
• Select your delivery or storage option.
Other tools for archiving exist. Currently https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me is the only one we've tested.

Q: Something went wrong creating / downloading my archive!

A: See reporting and troubleshooting tips: https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Data_Migration_Process_and_Considerations#If_you_have_problems

Q: What should I be doing as a G+ Community owner / moderator?

A: Communicate and coordinate with your community:
https://social.antefriguserat.de/index.php/Migrating_Google%2B_Communities

Q: Should I delete my Google+ account or Communities?

A: You could, but we don't suggest it. Doing so will remove all content you and others have made, making it much harder for others to save their work.

Q: Can I simply convert to a G Suite / Corporate Google+ account?

A: Short answer: No.

  1. Please share this widely, or post (the source is linked from the bottom) to your Circles & Communities.

  2. Word from Google a while back was to ensure profiles were deleted prior to shutdown. Apparently if they are left up they constitute a rivacy risk. Anyone here know about this.

  3. Ragestation That's news to me. Specific pronouncements from Google have been extraordinarily (and maddeningly) rare.

Please provide a link if you can.

  4. Edward Morbius Sorry no link, it was when announcement was first made. definitely words were said officially to this effect at that time. just wondering what others had heard. Any recommendations on best way to close up shop properly prior to shutdown appreciated

  5. Ragestation That feels like bad advice to me. G+ Profiles may well survive and morph into Google Profiles. There's also potential for people to misunderstand and delete their Google account instead of the G+ Profile attached to that account with wide consequences. and for the rest of us, when somebody deletes their G+ Profile it deletes all their post and comment content as well, leaving holes in the archives.

So I'd strongly recommend leaving your G+ profile in place and seeing what Google do about it.

  6. Julian Bond Great advice well explained, many thanks. On the adverse side , wouldnt leaving your profile up, without being able to potentially access it, be a privacy risk in itself?

  7. Ragestation https://aboutme.google.com/ is independent from G+ and the data in it is used in other products in the Google set. It will have to change some but won't necessarily and probably won't disappear. In any case there would be legal issues round the world if Google failed to allow you to edit or delete it.

The FAQ/FUQ is whether there will be a public view of that data that other people can see. We just don't know yet.

  8. Julian Bond Great info here thanks Julian. Certainly would like to think g+ will continue in some capacity we can use as consumers ,but have nagging doubts that suddenly access will be denied on consumer accounts ,when it all comes down. After all we have been informed that effectively consumer interaction will not be possible then. Agreed open public view would be a major issue.
