Hello! / ¡Hola! / Bonjour! / Ciao! 2019

Slowly winding down G+, manually deleting content. I gave up testing Dispora/Pluspora as engagement / numbers aren't there.

Looks like MeWe is a winner, I've found a few high quality groups full of #gplusrefugees #g+orphans https://mewe.com/i/johnsoanes

Also testing
Friendica https://social.isurf.ca/profile/lost2gether and
Klasterme

  1. Thanks for sharing your experience. Wonder why you'd delete, but ... whatever. I too am playing with Pluspora and MeWe.
Groups are as you say (MeWe) but I dislike the rest, except as a "Hangouts"/FB alternative. Pluspora isn't as pretty but I'm finding the individual and small group (aspect) conversations juicy, and polite.
"Engagement" etc., another matter. Nothing beats G+ (ignoring, as I do, FB). Happy New Year!
    And... nice image!. :))

  2. I have also deleted a chunk of my posts. And steadily deleting the people I follow ... no recent posts ... gone to ...

  3. Michael Fenichel I'm deleting because I want it deleted. Call me cynical but when Google says they will scrub the deck they were the ones who also said that they were winding G+ up in August.

I never used Hangouts and agree Pluspora has a nice interface, but nobody is there. On G+ I was into several communities, but put most of my focus on Collections. G+ used to be good for engagement, but that declined sharply (in my case) around January 2017. I went from having over 200 interactions (some over 500) on many of my posts to seeing it drop to 30, yet the follower count is still over 80K. I would say dormant and fake accounts outnumber real ones by 8:1

If you're into Groups/Communities MeWe is a good place, once you sift through the muck to find the gems. I dumped FB, not going back.

  4. Edward Morbius When it comes right down to it, there's concerns with every platform. Ongoing perpetual revelations about Facebook just happen to be front and center, as with Google. Fact is, all of them can change the rules / terms of use / functionality any time they want.

I think the bumfuzzled evolution of G+ is a big reason it never took off ...like dozens of Google's failed, 10 minute/month projects.

  5. John Soanes Thanks for that additional - not that you or anybody needs to "justify" decisions! I get reactions to group posts on MeWe mostly, and a few lovely people with whom I connected. (I also get come-on invites with R-rated photos.) It seems nice for very active, chat & emoji-oriented device users. For more quiet, reflective conversation, despite only a few connections and few feedback options (on comments), I do like Pluspora - and for its feed (music, photos). TMI, sorry thread. In sum: "Different strokes for different folks", but with one huge base fragmenting into different directions, different user-types will have lots of decision-making to do. Good luck all! :))

  6. John Soanes The issues with MeWe are manifest and the behaviour of the founder are highly deceptive.

This is not a case of a few bad apples.

And the whole point of "a few bad apples" is that they spoil the barrel.

What Facebook is (and it is bad) is entirely independent of what MeWe is. Which is a hive of rascist, white-supremecist, and other extremist members, as well as an inordinate amount of plain straight-up bullshit.

To degrees wholly disproportionate with other parts of the Web. Most particularly Google+, which I've been analysing in some depth for years.

(See for example: joindiaspora.com - G+ Communities Activity Analysis: It's the Posts, Stupid )

  7. Edward Morbius You lost me at " hive of rascist, white-supremecist, and other extremist members", you're talking about Facebook? Not what I see at MeWe, although I hang with a bunch of shutterbugs.

In any event I question anything that points to G+ growth in any area ...except SPAMMERS.

  8. John Soanes Go poke around the "Open Groups" and see what turns up, or search for your preferred white nationalist / nazi / hate group terminology.

Again, top communities by category are the main meat of this post. Though as I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm not inclined to argue this point to strenuously if you're going to be disinclined to see the problem:

  9. Edward Morbius There are extremist (groups) on all platforms, including this one. It's not the company I keep and I take solace in knowing they eventually get outed and shutdown. Unless their name is Donald Trump ...then anything goes.
