Hey, Official Atmos developer here.

Hey, Official Atmos developer here. I'm the Frontend Designer along with doing occasional backend work. I'm willing to do a Q&A for those interested in Project Atmos for the next three hours.

We are set to launch on April 15th, 2019, and are currently at 1,500 members within our discord. We have the backing of some fairly large community members. Namely Mother Bean, Quote, and Bees Knees.

Please ask any question you have below!

Comments

  1. Is this message a year out of date, or did you mean April 15, 2019?

  2. Edited the post, thanks for the correction Trevor.

  3. Alex Welcome, and thanks for taking questions!

  4. No problem! I figured with us starting to ease out of our main development phase and beginning the push into a bugfix and cleanup phase, it'd be now as the best time to begin letting out more information on our product and what our goals are.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Alex Do you have a link to the project / site / description? How about a description of what the service is, who's behind it, your goals.

    Private / centralised / federated / public?

  6. We're a team of members all from Google Plus, who have several years of experience in coding. We've been working since on October. As of right now due to a sudden attention boost, and the change in closing date for Google Plus, we've shifted from light production, to full steam ahead.

We have the simple goal of creating a very Google Plus esque website, while at the same time having our own unique twist. We are very centered on the community and meeting new people aspect of Google Plus.

The page linked is a temporary landing page, as I have not had the time from working on the main website to create a landing page with a proper design.

We're working on getting registered as a company under the name Hexasphere, and have already purchased a domain for said company.

Currently, we are expecting to have 10,000 members by the end of the year, and have calculated all our costs for that many members. We may get many more, we may get way less. Our resources are fully expandable with use rather than solid numbers, meaning we will not be overusing or underusing the resources required.

  7. Alex What's the primary country of operations?

  8. Most developers are within the USA, however we do have some localization members in the EU and in Brazil. To substitute the speed loss from those areas, we employ use of a CDN which caches all images and videos in several areas throughout the world to allow for highspeed delivery no matter your location.

We support a lot of languages as well. English, Spanish, Polish, German, Russian, Brazilian, and Chinese are the major ones I can name off the top of my head, and all translators are community volunteers who we have verified are fluent in the language they translate.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Alex how much would this service cost monthly? I ask because some of us are on fixed incomes.
Also, will your product (?) be good for those of us who are tech-challenged? (I'm amazed most days when my computer turns on)
And will you have a phone app? Sometimes I have to spend long stretches at a hospital and don't have access o my computer.

Atmos is entirely free. If you would like to support us we do have a planned membership system but it doesn't provide anything too much. It's really just to support us.

The layout of the site is fairly simple for everyone to use. The top of the screen includes a clean looking navigation bar with several general icons. Post, notifications, profile, communities, and settings.

We do have a phone app planned but it will not be launched till after the main site due to us wanting to make sure our functions are all complete beforehand.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Alex thank you so much. Please keep me in the loop, as well as my partner Stan Kain. He's the "tech guy" at our house and I'm sure he'd be interested to learn more about your site.
    Thanks again.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Alex my partner did want me to ask if there will be the ability to do both public and private posts.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes, there is. We plan on having the circle system identical to what G+ used to have.

    ReplyDelete
  14. What is a "discord"? (When is it good?)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Alex I'm sure he'll be very excited to hear that!
Will you also have something similar to hangouts? To speak one on one to folks?

    ReplyDelete
  16. We have one planned, however we don't have an ETA for release

    ReplyDelete
  17. Alex thank you again for your time. Didn't mean to monopolize the conversation but so many of us are looking for a place to feel like home, and not being satisfied with what we've found so far.
    Again, my thanks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Motto: Hexasphere, taking squaring the circle to the next dimension!

    amirite?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Alex careful of a 'translator who speaks fluent Brazilian'

    ReplyDelete
  20. We're being fairly cautious. We know languages have their sublanguages. Such as German having Austrian German, and Portuguese having Brazilian Portguese

    ReplyDelete
  21. How are you planning to find this platform, given it is free?

    ReplyDelete
  22. As of right now we plan on paying for it ourself, along with allowing brand accounts to do promoted searches. Said searches are entirely optional but enabled by default. Our costs remain relatively low. At 10k members being active every day we have $150 per as our costs. We have 6 developers willing to pay for the roughly 2k per year we'd need to pay

    ReplyDelete
  23. Diana Studer I’m not sure about Brasil, but in Portugal we refer to Brazilian Portuguese as “Brasileiro”.

  24. Have you seen your posts here? you yourself state that you cannot be trusted and you have a joke around me. I do not trust your project and there is a reason for it! If you worked for several months, then why do we see an empty site on the domain, where the layouts Where is at least something, considering that you have a group of developers. I didn’t do this and didn’t undertake such plans, but I created 20 for the services sector and was ready to show what was happening at any stage! A typical website is a maximum for a person who is engaged in graphics month.Who are you trying to cheat?
It is like a cancer patient to give hope and deceive!
I beg you not to delete my comment! I want to hear the answer full. Thank you.

  26. Backend development is PHP. I wanted to experiment in Rust or Ruby, but the vast majority of the Devs know PHP resulting in that.

On the subject of layouts. That's a temporary landing site while we work on the main one.

Attached below is a teaser of the WIP mobile view. The colors are not the final ones, and are subject to change. The star button is the temporary icon for likes, as we feel the overall starbased theme we're focusing on needs something akin to stars. As mentioned however that is not the final color pallet for the likes. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Nw6L07ZdE9kkiXllTfuX1pDR6R60cdTIr5Sf_YXVfYFr7KGkIW4iqElhNbe1LdSrVePV2tIMWCB1uikv_NxNjRQ8oXBxLXsCw-c=s0

  46. They were citing a post I had made ages ago back before I had even entered Atmos as a source for unreliability. While their concerns are valid, I can assure that the product is under steady development, and as mentioned with an ETA of April 15th. Unlike the other rushed platforms we want to take our time to iron out bugs and patch potential vulnerabilities.

  47. Alex And why, in that case, you removed the quotation from you, it was not many years ago, but in time when you started your project, all the information from your tape!

Personally, I have reason not to believe.
    It's my personal opinion!
Sorry for my english, as taught.

  50. I don't think I'd trust a PHP-based platform with my private messages. I've done too much work in security for that. But then I mostly post public messages anyway...

Go and Rust do make it a lot easier to avoid some of the common security problems while being very efficient. Go is syntactically simpler. We use Go at my job and it just doesn't matter whether people already know it when they arrive. Rust has a bigger learning curve.

(I keep hoping for an open source distributed social media platform in Go, but apparently it doesn't happen without somebody writing some code, and I care about other things more.)

Anyway, that's why I asked. Thanks and good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I had those concerns my self. PHP is known more for speed rather than security. However, we have been spending a fair chunk of time dedicated to making sure everything is secure. We've tested with quite a few Pentesting software, and also manually did a lot of what the Pentest software would do.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Alex if you are still around for a question, just saw this post. The question I would like answered from any new place is will posts be searchable on Google, Bing or any engine?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Our website is searchable, however I have no plans to index posts as that requires links to every single post on the site which is immmensely anti privacy.

    ReplyDelete
  54. However we do have a search feature within our site that does let you search for posts.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Alex I hope you're still around because I also have a few questions:

    1. Why discord? I think discord is the worst possible place to work on software development.
    2. Is Atmos going to be open source or proprietary? Sorry if this has been asked and answered before.
    3. If it is open source then why not host it on GitHub/Gitlab so more people can contribute and get involved instead of a few select volunteers?
    4. You said you won't have every post indexed, which is understandable considering the privacy concerns but how about people who decided to post publicly for the world to see, since you said Atmos will have 'circles' like G+? I think you should not repeat the same mistake that MeWe does (that prevents many people from adopting it).

    ReplyDelete
  56. 1. The discord is more of a place for our community to interact and make new friends as we work on the website, and it allows us to drop announcements easier for members to know what we're up to.
2/3. It's a closed source product. We have a private Github repository for the devs, and are always looking for new members, but one of our leads decided it was best to keep it as a private repo in order for us to be able to avoid leaks of what we're working on.
    4. We meant posts won't be directly searchable on Google, however all posts shared publicly will be searchable from the searchbar in the middle of the navbar on desktop and from the sidebar's link on mobile.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Another walled garden. Splendid. /unsub

    ReplyDelete
  58. "to avoid leaks of what we're working on"

Sounds like someone with low or no understanding of how open source works.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I dunno if you’re still taking questions, but I saw something happened in the discord about a week ago, what exactly happened?
