I got my first porn solicitation on MeWe today.

I got my first porn solicitation on MeWe today. It will also be the last. In my opinion, crap like that should not be possible at all, especially if they are so concerned about the privacy of their users as they say they are. No, MeWe is exactly like Facebook and other such networks. Pity.

I'll keep on lurking around in the Fediverse somewhere, hope to see some of you there. You definitely won't see me on MeWe. 😡

Comments

  1. While I'm not too fond of MeWe either, porn bots are also active on G+ and Mastodon. And the rest of the Fediverse will be an easy target too once it gains popularity.

  2. I got one my first day there. I just blocked him. Chances are they're everywhere, no matter what assurances you get.

    ReplyDelete
  3. You never get porn solicitations here? Astonishing.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Saw that too Jan Henkins extreme porn sent to me on MeWe. You can find me in the Fediverse via shelenn@social.isurf.ca

  6. I had the same.. and i said bye bye mewe..
Here the porn is soft if you compare it with the one i received... :)

  7. well the problem with me we may be the problem to with others is these are Facebook exiles there banned from Facebook google plus is going away. So they migrating towards all these places like Mastdon and all the places where you don't have to have like to get an account similar to Facebook or have a Google account to get on like Google Plus. so you're finding yeah there's going to be more and more on me.we you'll probably find him another alternate social media places to these are just basically what they call Facebook exiles that are banned forever from Facebook

  8. I've been in the Fediverse several months same as MeWe. I've been on Twitter for years as well as G+. The extreme porn I saw in MeWe was far worse than any I've seen elsewhere. I've seen no porn in the Fediverse (I suppose it depends on who you follow). It has been rare to see porn on G+ and as noted by others it is very soft by comparison. It is also rare to see porn on Twitter. I've seen none on Mastodon, Diaspora, Hubzilla, GanGo, SocialHome, GNU Social, or Friendica. Now an excellent point was made earlier - those banned from FB and former Gab are welcomed at MeWe apparently. Are they all porn pervs? Likely not - but apparently some are.

If I see them in the Fediverse and I run my own node or am on a friend's node, we have the power to shut them off. I've also seen collective bans done in the Fediverse for extreme hate speech cases. Home is in the Fediverse for me.

  9. I thought MeWe’s magical walled garden was supposed to prevent that.

But It supports my theory that Castle MeWe has rats in the walls.

    ReplyDelete
  10. On MeWe you don't really have to block, just refuse the friend request.
You will only see that person in shared groups, if not well managed (still the case of most).
    Then, blocking is useful.

Easier than G+, where an old troll (Bill Lively) just created a new G+ account to harass.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Christian Nalletamby doesn't work when you go to a profile of someone asking to connect and see the porn - you can't unsee it

  12. Not sure I’m that keen on MeWe but haven’t had any porn turn up. So still giving it a go because lots of people I follow are there. Fingers crossed. Twitter isn’t so pristine. Haven’t checked pluspora much but am interested in friendica. Don’t think many that I’d follow will go there but who knows. It seems that time will tell. Just a pain going through the process of learning the different environments but if you don’t try it you won’t find anything out.

  13. I've had a couple of porn accounts in the Fediverse send me friend requests. I looked at their feeds (thankfully, on my phone, not my work computer!) and when I saw what they were, SuperBlock to the rescue!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Trevor Schadt really love the privacy and blocking tools in Friendica.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shelenn Ayres The more I use Friendica, the more frustrated I become at the fact that most G+ refugees are being led to believe that Pluspora is the be all and end all of the Federated multiverse. I think F'ca is a much more feature rich platform, and I wish more people knew about it before they "settled in."

    ReplyDelete
  16. Trevor Schadt Some have accounts on multiple Fediverse network types. Some have migrated to F'ca. After the new release this month we need better tutorials and some theme improvements that make it easier to use. All being discussed.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Trevor Schadt the good thing about the Fediverse/Federation is no matter which network type someone chooses, with Hubzilla or Friendica we can all stay in touch. I see active development and improvements based on user inputs without regard to corporate interests. While I am not anti-profit, I believe user generated content belongs to the users.

  18. 2C on topic - From the start I've had invites from scantily clad "looking for relationship" people, on MeWe, and wonder if I'd posted nothing, and it's private/secure, how I got these. I've been careful, and so far none of the few contacts (from groups, which to me are MeWe's strong suit - for photo sharing) have sent or led to porn links, etc. On Pluspora, it's more like my small-circle G+ experience, a few people with like sensibilities (and hash tags). Zero spam. Lastly, without repeating the whole "which is best?" thing - the answer to which is, it depends on your wants and goals! - I do agree, after eons of use, flickr remains the best forum for display, photographer feedback, and public find-a-bility. Even the "free" tier now in place gives enough space for a huge number of people to remain free.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am having trouble with that on MeWe as well.
David Thiery and I are trying to keep citizens of pluspora as safe as possible from that type of nonsense, so if anyone comes across it, please let us know immediately. There are measures we can take to protect our pod in particular.

    ReplyDelete
  20. People who are crazy about pornography are also on Google+ a lot. Of course they are also coming to MeWe. I just report them to operation and block.

  22. Andi Droid Exactly. I have been a member since 2005. I only noticed the new limits (for "free") with all the advertisement for PRO (their funding source) and the announcement of the new limits for free - and their re-commitment to remaining online and available for all. I have never seen spam (shhh!) and ended up with a small group of invited memberships to many topics I have photographed - countries, churches, black & white, etc.
The best displays, the best way to see what other photographers "like", and an easy way to make PUBLIC albums. MeWe is not public. Pluspora lacks the features. With no more G+ it remains - in my mind - the most stable, diverse, and easy platform purely for the joy of photography - complete with .exif information, location, and super-easy ability to share with groups or albums at any time. My opinion - of Flickr.

Enjoy! I'm not selling anything or looking for fame (only comfort & feedback) but you can see what I've done in the past 14 years, easily. And it's all free, with years before I fill it (maybe) - flickr.com - Flickr

True: no chat (MeWe's strong suit, IMM, or like "Hangouts" ), and without so many nice interface things happening like Google's ecosystem (YouTube, etc.), but "it is what it is", a great place for photographers to share with others. With notifications by email and online. So, just a nice place for photo enthusiasts.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have been on MeWe as well and had one once. Yesterday where a bit appearantly attacked all chat. Otherwise none. Maybe it's more the groups you are part of and less MeWe?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Andi Droid Flickr have ich gerade wieder verlassen. 1000 Photos is nicht so viel.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm surprised. MeWe is an Invitation based social network. Only those who you have invited / authorised can send you postings.

So unless you blindly und unquestioning say “yes” to any friend request and group invite bot's shouldn't be able to send you anything.

Which means it's your own fault when you get unwanted porn. Just learn to say NO to friend requests and group invites

  26. Shelenn Ayres “former Gab ” — GAB was only offline for a week. It's still there despite all attempts to shut it down:

Martin Krischik i would like to see what they would do on tumblr, then (before NSFW ban) - here you get 10+/day follows from spam-porn-bots and so what? =)
    Cry time %)

  29. Sonne Cornelia control phone numbers? Any link or more info about it?
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Andrius Narbutas I read through some of the terms of service and I do not see anything in there about controlling phone numbers and the like beyond what it is meant to do with phone numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wait, give link, give at least proper screenshot, where they say that they control phone numbers.
    Any src?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I still do not understand where you found such info. If you are talking about app permissions:
mewe.kayako.com - Why does MeWe require so many permissions for the mobile app, like accessing my microphone and pictures? - Powered by Kayako Help Desk Software
there's nothing about controlling phone numbers, but you can block app from accessing stuff anyway.
So this is probably some different interface, but where?

Ja!,... mir reicht mein kostenloses Konto auch erstmal. Denn 1.000 ist eine vernünftige Menge. ;)

  35. Christian Nalletamby The connection request includes explicit material, so everything is visible whether you want to see or not. Other social sites only exposes such images when you go to the user profile that sent you the request. Having rich media in a connection request is potentially "uncomfortable" depending on who is in your immediate vicinity, and also whether you happen to be at work or at home.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Martin Krischik Martin, yes. I agree with you. Anyway, that's by the by, I won't be using MeWe. I feel uncomfortable about it in any case, this porn thing is just the last nail in the coffin for me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jan Henkins Sorry, did not understand you.
Are you saying you can see the porn (or whatever) whether you want to see or not?

    I don't think so.
Only the user profile that sent you the request.

OTOH, have another warning for MeWe users:
Bots send you a request, you get the mail, and they after a few hours, they cancel it.
Newbies, starting from their mailbox, will try to re-connect, and become the requesters.
    Avoid, if possible.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Christian Nalletamby All I know is that pictures from this person/bot profile was immediately visible in the invite, without me having to follow the link in the invite to the actual profile. This is what I saw, and it was rather upsetting at the time because I had my 12yo son next to me at that moment. Incidentally we were evaluating whether MeWe would be a safe haven for him and his immediate friends to have their little Minecraft group. Needless to say, MeWe "Aint Gonna Be That" (c)(tm).

Please move any more discussion of similar issues elsewhere, because I have no need or want to faff about with MeWe anymore. I also do not have a means to troubleshoot it further, because I deleted my MeWe account.

  39. Trevor Schadt It's no so much that Pluspora's the be-all / end-all, but that it was set up and available at the right time. Dumb luck (and extreme generosity) by Di and David.

I'm on Diaspora (and have been since 2012), but Friendica and Hubzilla sound damned interesting. If I can find the time to look at them in earnest.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Shelenn Ayres That's well worth a standalone post on a durable platform.

#PlexodusReddit is my usual home for such things these days, or of course your Friendica or Diaspora account.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Di Cleverly Often these perverts and criminals call it "free speech" and this is facilitated by the owners of sites that allow it in the name of "free speech". The same can be said for hate speech. I condone neither.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Shelenn Ayres as you know, on diaspora they have what's called an NSFW curtain. So once you tag something, the person viewing is responsible for clicking it. That way, you can have all the "free speech" you want, but you MUST tag it. On my pod, you get a warning. You do it again, you are removed. There is no catfishing or soliciting allowed.
I'm a huge believer in personal boundaries and the right to those.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Di Cleverly I get that and Friendica has a NSFW addon as well. The first problem I see with limiting it to NSFW is there will be non-pornographic posts of interest tagged that way.

Perhaps an additional Adult Content tag is warranted. Clicking it then is opt-in per post. But that still does not prevent harm by those violating policy. Hence, it is necessary to have both passive moderation (the NSFW approach or filtering code) and active moderation (teams of humans enforcing policy).

I applaud the effort! But, speaking from experience, let me be a devil's advocate:

The way things are handled in virtual worlds is via maturity ratings of the worlds themselves. Some grids are entirely adult by default and this is noted in the ToS as well as posted in-world. This is similar to an adult site ToS opt in approach.

Others may have adult rated worlds in an otherwise G or PG rated grid. This second case requires far more human moderation efforts and likely cannot prevent all harm as your policy cannot prevent all harm. This is the more common case also the more difficult.

In some cases, grid owners will absolve themselves from liability via ToS putting the responsibility and liability on the world owner. However, the world owner has poor moderation tools and zero visibility into the age of the visitor because they have no grid administration rights. Additionally, the user must literally look at a world's ratings to determine if it is rated adult or not and cannot do so without visiting first. Are you seeing the parallel?

This brings to mind two of my goals for the software roadmap of a project I am involved in: better moderation tools and world maturity rating posted to the user's interface before first entry with a requirement to consent to adult content or not enter the world. (Yes there will be complaints this is extra clicking but it is a one time thing worthy of preventing unintentional harm.)
