I need help asap with Google+ & Google Photos.

I need help asap with Google+ & Google Photos.
I have various Google+ accounts which have hundreds and thousands of photos uploaded in them, but the majority of them are not saved in their Google Photos. How can I save all the photos I have posted here on each G+ account on their Google Photos account? I can't download them to my devices, bc it's simply impossible, way too many and my devices usually have like 400 MB storage. Thanks.

P.S. I only have mobile devices. No PC or laptop.

  1. Can you access a computer (a friend's, perhaps, or at a publilc library) and download the images to an external hard drive? You should be able to use Google Takeout to do that. Another option might be to share each image to Google Photos, but that would be very laborious, as you'd have to do it one by one.

  2. Ooh... good luck with that (all from a mobile device!). Not what you want to hear, but without some place to STORE "hundreds and thousands of photos" - unless your device has automatic "cloud storage" - you're talking many gigs more than 400MB. So what are your options? Well (this sounds almost snarky, but I'm doing it myself!) - for starts you can take some screen shots of beloved pages as they now display, if that's important. (To me, some collection displays I really like and would love to save or replicate.) You can download as many - right from the various sources (several Google photos accounts?) - as your memory can hold, but that's likely nowhere near your "100's and 1000's" of images. So, I'd start #1 with a place to store that much data. If your device has huge cloud space, great, better get started scooping up your own images you want to keep & don't already have.

If you have access to a computer which can download "takeout" files from Google, you can get them all (if you have a drive to hold all of it), but you're going to have to fish out your images from among a lot of other files, as I did. They're redundant across many folders, too, if they appeared on different pages (collections, circles, etc.) I probably didn't need to, but I "took out" all my Google data, separated out exact-match images, and got rid of the many dupes. If you're just after "every image you ever posted to Google+" this will do it.

All the talk about "takeout" won't do you any good without a lot of storage space and a computer. You'll also need strong computer chops to re-assemble what I think of as "Humpty Dumpty" about to fall. Many developers and bloggers are trying reconstruction of entire Google history, and there are tools and techniques you can easily find - if it's applicable. (For you no, it seems, but I mention for others coming across this.)

Take screenshots. Download what you truly love and want to keep. And if you're a regular user of Google Photos, you may find some of your pages remaining live. "No one knows" exactly what will remain, perhaps in read-only/archive form (like Picasa). You can download from there now, an easy thing to do - if you have drive space! Lastly, I hear you can search yourself on Google images independent of G+, and that even after disintegration of the platform pieces, some "products" may remain in one form or another. "We'll see."

    Good luck!

  4. Get a PC or Mac.
    Do it now.
Then get a huuuuge hard drive; say 4 TB or more.

  5. Firebase?
Save content from Google+ from being deleted by Google to just another Google service?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thank you a lot, guys. Keep the advices coming.
I don't want to take screenshots or save every content, I just want to save ALL photos and videos I have ever uploaded in G+. Some are already save in Google Photos, bc everything I posted in G+ used to get saved in Google Photos, but in the recent years, that didn't happen anymore. :/

  7. Gerhard Torges it won't happen 😢

  8. G+ shutting down is the worst thing that has ever happened to me since I use the internet. I'm so mad I trusted this site and used to upload everything here so I could delete it from my devices, to have some storage.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Gerhard Torges If nothing else, it buys someone without desktop/laptop access additional time. I know of no other alternatives for mobile only users.

  10. Do you know about the album archive, Unknown Hero?
That's where you find all images you posted.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And do you have Google Drive? They may mostly be there, the ones you uploaded.

    ReplyDelete
  12. cobalt please idk if I have a Goodle Drive. Can I do it with Google Drive? Like save all my pics there. How many GBs do we have in GD?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Gerhard Torges you mean the album archive in G+?

    ReplyDelete
  14. As cobalt please said, Google Drive (if you use it) isn't supposed to be going anywhere if you now use it, same as other cloud-based products (like iCloud etc). Without knowing your specific resources, apps, etc., it's hard to know your best options. If you have cloud space and don't have a big drive locally but use Google Drive and have space, sure, that's one place to stash photos you're saving. Really, IMM it's super-important to think about all the things you'll miss if it disappears. Start there, and soon, however you do it (cloud, take-out, &/or individual image downloads). See which option works best for your specific situation.Good luck!

  15. Unknown Hero depends on IF you have it. I had 15 GB storage there but then in August I paid Google $20 for a total of 100 GB.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Unknown Hero you hace 15 GB Orange storage in Gdrive. If your photos are below 15 Mpx, you can upload ilimitate number of photos whithout waste use space of your Gdrive. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Unknown Hero you can save your Google Takeout archive to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box under Delivery Method. All offer at least some free storage.

Google Drive gives you 15 GB free. You can check how much you have here:
    https://www.google.com/settings/storage

You may want to wait a couple of weeks to hear what Google+ (hopefully) says about what is happening to the photos from posts.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Unknown Hero: We can try to help you, but you'll have to help us help you too.

Can you get access to a desktop PC? If not, why?

How much of your content is original? Looking through your posts, dating to February 2016, most is copied from elsewhere. This doesn't invalidate your interest in exporting images, but it appears little original content will actually be lost.

What country do you live in?

Specific jurisdictions may have data privacy and/or protection laws which give you rights over your own data, including download or retrieval in a usable and useful form. We strongly encourage you to defend those rights if you have them.

Your main tools for G+ data export are:

The Friends+Me Google+ Exporter. This is a desktop application which requires the Chrome or Chromium browser installed. It works on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It has been used successfully by many users and we recommend it very, very highly. It can export directly to a Wordpress or Blogger site.

Google Data Takeout. This is Google's official mechanism for data export from Google products. It can work but frequently does not, and can be useful, but frequently is not. Attempts to work directly with Google to improve it since the week of the Google+ sunset announcement have failed entirely. That said, it works, server-side, and creates an archive which can be stored on Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft, or other data storage services. You will likely have to pay for storage. A VERY unfortunate aspect of GDT is that it creates massive archives, mostly consisting of redudant copies of image files, many of no relevance. Your use of Google+ likely represents a worst possible case for this.

Romain Vialard's Firebase-based export script. This is technical but is also server-based and may work for you. I have not yet used this, and I don't know what if any costs are or will be involved.

A fourth option is the Internet Archive. You can save a given URL using the pattern https://web.archive.org/save/

If you can obtain a list of all your posts, then it is possible to write a simple tool to submit these to the Internet Archive. Images should be saved along with the content. Your Google+ Activity Log is a list which includes your post URLs. We've not built a tool to do this, but it is possible one could be created, which could run either locally on a mobile device (Android tablet certainly, using Termux), or via a server-based process.

You'll then have to access your content, in future, from the Internet Archive itself.

It is possible that there are, though we are presently unaware of third-party direct import tools, e.g., from a blogging or photo-sharing site. These would allow direct import of your G+ content to those sites. Tim Berners-Lee, of Solid, has been working on such a tool, I'm not aware of its present state.

If you want to preserve your data, you will almost certainly have to spend some money and/or acquire resources. If you're unwilling or unable to do so, you will lose access to this data.

  19. I've been adding comments to the original post in the G+Help community.

    1) This is a FAQ. Google REALLY should provide specific instructions and/or provide a one click utility to move images from G+Photos to G Photos and/or preserve the G+Photos from Posts after the sunset.

    2) Ask in the Photos community. We need pressure from the Photos product experts as well to make 1) happen.

    3) At the least, we need to (or could) develop a simple set of instructions for moving G+ Photos from Posts to Photos.

  20. Julian Bond It's becoming increasing obvious that Google have no intention of doing so, and are actively frustrating attempts to be able to do that.

Images may be a problem with G+, for Google.

  22. The Internet Archive has a ton of resources here. I've just been exploring this informally over the past few days.

There is an active Google+ archival project:
    archiveteam.org - Google+ - Archiveteam

It's not produced much but may be of interest.

Alois Bělaška: You might find this of interest.

  45. Edward Morbius I plan to take a look at the IA sometime next week.

I don't think of IA as a good solution for backup of personal photos from G+ though.

Plussers should store all their backup data locally and only then decide what the next step should be.

My data is just pictures and some videos from the internet and many that are mine too (original). Most pics are from beautiful places, nature, my country, and almost anything I love, movies, cartoons, music, comics, artworks, video games, nostalgic photos, memes, important stats or information, etc. etc.

I live in Puerto Rico, which is part of USA.

You'll need some desktop I am afraid, it is not possible to transfer G+ photos to Google Photos with with just mobile. Desktop is really needed for this operation.

  73. Alois Bělaška Flickr is an awesome site, but not better than GP. In there you can only post 1000 photos (you have to pay to upload more than 1k) and it's not private I think. In GP I can make albums and it's so easy to use anywhere.

  74. Unknown Hero I didn't just ask you whether you could access a PC, I asked you why not. Please answer the question.

The San Juan Community Library offers Wifi and computers:

    yourlibrarysanjuan.org - SERVICES AND COLLECTIONS

There are other libraries in Puerto Rico, if that one is not sufficiently close to you.

Worldcat lists 175 libraries in the territory, though not all are public. You may still have access to public college or junior college libraries. You can search by entering "puerto rico" in the search field here, or your postal code:

  75. Can you get to Aguada?

    Aguada, 00602, Puerto Rico
    9RH7+MM Aguada, Puerto Rico

I don't know if they have computer service, but call them Monday to find out.

  97. Unknown Hero this means GDrive can't open the file, thus no preview.
You have to try with a PC.
    There's no way around this.

Yeah, Aguada is close. But like I told you, I don't like using public computers for my personal stuff.

  100. Unknown Hero You're going to have to look at your options, your limits -- both imposed by others and yourself, and your goals, and start making some decisions and compromises.

I've given you as much help and information as I can here. You need to decide what to do, and do it soon, or you will not have your images.

    Good luck.

  103. Gerhard Torges I wouldn't have this problem, if G+ still saved automatically the pics I post here to Google Photos like it used to do until like 2015 or 2016 :'(
Why did Google stop doing that?

  104. Edward Morbius thanks. I'll let you know if I decide to do something else. 👍

  106. Gerhard Torges I think that's when they stopped caring about G+. They also separated Youtube comments from G+. It was so easy to respond to Youtube comments from G+.

  107. Unknown Hero is that a .zip file? There might be ways to extract this directly in drive using some 3rd party apps: makeuseof.com - How to Unzip ZIP Files in Google Drive Without Downloading Them First
